Quick Answer

Here's what Nora homeowners ask most, along with the answers we'd give standing in your living room. Nothing here is a sales pitch, and several of the answers point at the cheaper option.

  • Services: faux wood blinds, wood blinds, vertical blinds, aluminum mini blinds
  • Service area: Nora, Marion County, IN and surrounding areas
  • Two different timelines apply. New custom product takes weeks because it has to be made. Repairs to what's already hanging, a cord lock, a ladder string, a chain that jumped the clutch, are usually far quicker.
  • Insured and bonded
  • Serving Nora, IN since 2008
No Cost, No Obligation

Schedule Your Free In-Home Measure

Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. Nora's houses carry sunrooms, picture windows, walls of glass, bay windows, skylights, French doors and basement egress windows, often several in one house. Many of the older houses have replacement windows, some of them vinyl, and replacements can sit at a different depth than the originals, so the crew checks depth before choosing an inside or outside mount. Crystal Lake adds large banks of windows facing the water, and the crew measures each section so the shade lines stay level across the whole run of glass.

I agree to be contacted by Nora Window Treatments regarding my inquiry.

Nora covers the far north side of Indianapolis, from Williams Creek and 79th Street up to 96th Street and I-465, and from Township Line Road east to the White River. The area stayed small and quiet until the 1950s, when northward growth brought new homes, and half of the plats here date mostly from the 1940s and 1950s, on lots between 0.25 and 0.8 acre under mature trees. Sherwood Forest followed from 1959 to 1970 and Pennwood North in the 1980s, and the Crystal Lake plat added houses from 1998 through 2014. CityPointe brings new two stories from 2025 and 2026 to the north side. The housing stock is varied, with the older plats keeping the large wooded lots that give Nora its character and the newer ones on far smaller lots.

Hardware color and control side get decided at the measure and they're hard to change later. Control side means which end the chain or wand lives on, and it should be the end you actually reach without walking around furniture. It sounds trivial until you've lived with a chain behind a chest of drawers for a year in a Nora bedroom.

When you add a room a year later we pull the original order, match the product line and the color code, and tell you honestly what we can and can't promise about the dye lot. If the line has been discontinued we'll say that too, and we'll bring samples of what's closest so you can look at it in your Nora room instead of trusting a code on a page.

Built in the Last Few Years?

Many of our Nora customers moved into a house built by one of these companies. Builder blinds are usually stock sizes trimmed to fit, so if yours came with the house and never ran right, that is why. We measure the openings as built rather than off the plan.

What We Are Running in Nora Right Now

Both offers apply to work quoted and ordered while they are posted here. Ask about them at the in-home measure and we will put the discount on the written quote before you decide anything.

Offer 1

$500 Off Your First Exterior Screen, Plus a Free Motorization Upgrade

Take $500 off your first exterior screen and we will add the motorization upgrade at no charge. Exterior screens stop solar heat outside the glass, which is the only place you can stop it before it is already in the room, and a motor is the difference between using one and forgetting it.

Applies to a first exterior screen. Ask at the measure so the discount is on the written quote before you order. Motorized product runs on batteries that need replacing, about a year on Hunter Douglas PowerView.

Offer 2

Free Motorization Upgrade on Select Interior Shades

Pick from the qualifying interior shade lines and the motorization upgrade is free. It is worth most on the openings you would otherwise leave alone: tall great room glass, anything above a stair, and the west windows nobody remembers to close by four.

Select interior shade lines only. We will tell you at the measure which of your openings qualify. Batteries are a real running cost and are not included.

Flexible Financing

Payment Options That Work for You

We partner with established lenders so Nora Window Treatments clients can spread the cost of a major window treatment project into manageable payments. Ask your project lead about current options.

Deferred Payment Plans

Start the work now and begin paying later. On a whole-house order this is how people phase a large job without phasing the install.

  • Payments deferred for a promotional period
  • Rate and period set by the lender
  • Quoted price held for the order
Equal Payment Plans

Divide the project cost into equal monthly payments across a fixed promotional period, so the budget is predictable from day one.

  • Equal monthly payments
  • Fixed promotional period
  • Simple, predictable budgeting
Long-Term Financing

Spread a larger window treatment project across a longer term with fixed equal payments, for homeowners who want the lowest monthly amount.

  • Extended terms available
  • Fixed equal payments
  • Suited to larger window treatment projects
Ask About Financing

Financing is arranged through third party lenders and is subject to credit approval. Rates, terms, and promotional periods are set by the lender and disclosed to you in writing before you sign. Ask your project lead which programs are open right now.

Window Treatment Services in Nora

From one room to a whole house, Nora Window Treatments measures every opening, orders it custom, and installs it with the same crew that took the measurements.

Faux Wood Blinds in Nora

Inside mount looks built in and shows the trim. Outside mount covers the opening and hides a frame that isn't square. The factory takes a deduction off an inside-mounted width, typically a sixteenth of an inch per side, which is why an inside blind never touches both sides of a Nora opening.

Learn more

Wood Blinds in Nora

A wood headrail needs depth inside the opening to sit flush, and older Nora trim doesn't always offer it. When the depth isn't there, an outside mount on a bracket looks deliberate. A headrail hanging proud of shallow trim never does.

Learn more

Vertical Blinds in Nora

Humidity does nothing to a vinyl vane, and that's the quiet advantage in a Nora walkout where a wood product would be a mistake. Fabric vanes are stiffened, and through the muggy stretch from late May to late September they can relax slightly at the hem.

Learn more

Aluminum Mini Blinds in Nora

Stacked at the top, a 1 inch blind gives you the smallest stack in the business. A small slat means a small stack and more visible glass. That's a genuine advantage on a short Nora window where a 2 inch faux wood would swallow the top of the view.

Learn more

Roller Shades in Nora

Roll direction gets decided before the order, not on install day. Regular roll drops the fabric close to the glass, while reverse roll carries it away from a crank or a lock. Reverse roll doesn't work behind a fascia, and that's a real constraint on some Nora windows.

Learn more

Solar Shades in Nora

Here's the part that surprises people after dark. A screen giving you a one-way view at three in the afternoon reverses completely at nine at night with the lamps on, and a Nora street can see in. If the room needs evening privacy, it needs a second layer.

Learn more

Cellular Shades in Nora

Nationally, custom treatments run about $250 to $2,600 per window, and cellular spans most of that range on its own depending on cell count and lift. Nobody publishes Nora installed pricing, so we're quoting your actual openings rather than a per-window average.

Learn more

Zebra Shades in Nora

Nationally, custom treatments run roughly $250 to $2,600 per window. Zebra sits above a basic roller and below a motorized system, which nationally runs about $300 to $1,500 per window installed. There's no Nora installed pricing published by anyone credible.

Learn more

Roman Shades in Nora

Romans belong where a room is trying to look finished, like a Nora dining room or a front window that gets photographed. They bring fabric and softness to a window and they don't need the yardage or the floor space a drapery panel does.

Learn more

Woven Wood Shades in Nora

Nora Window Treatments is insured and bonded and puts your Nora order in writing, as Indiana's IC 24-5-11 requires over $150. The liner choice belongs on that paperwork, because a woven wood without a liner is a different product from one with it.

Learn more

Blackout Shades in Nora

Tall blackout shades leak more, not less. Lutron notes larger light gaps past 120 inches or a four-to-one height-to-width ratio. A two-story Nora stairwell or a tall bedroom window is where channels aren't an upgrade any more, they're the requirement.

Learn more

Plantation Shutters in Nora

Shutters take the long end of a two to five week custom lead time, because they're built as a frame and panels for one specific Nora opening. Paint batches also shift, so a whole house ordered at once matches better than a house ordered room by room.

Learn more

Cafe Shutters in Nora

Street-facing front rooms and ground floor baths are where these belong. A Nora house sitting close to the sidewalk gets privacy at eye level and doesn't give up the light that a full-height shutter would have taken.

Learn more

Motorized Shades in Nora

National figures put motorized shades near $300 to $1,500 per window installed. The spread isn't fabric, it's motor size and shade width, so a wide Nora great room opening quotes higher than a bath window wearing the same material.

Learn more

Custom Drapery in Nora

A print has to line up across panels, and on a wide Nora window that means the workroom matching the repeat at every seam. It costs yardage. Skipping it is how you end up with a pattern that jumps a half inch at the joint and can't be unseen.

Learn more

Valances & Top Treatments in Nora

Central Indiana sits muggy from late May through late September, and fabric stretched over a padded board feels that. A tight upholstered face on a Nora cornice holds better than a loose gathered one, and natural fibers on a sunny wall won't hold their tension the way a blend does.

Learn more

Exterior Solar Shades in Nora

Indiana issues no license for this trade, so what protects you is the paperwork. We're insured and bonded, and IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract over $150, which on a Nora exterior job should name the mounting substrate, the mesh, the openness factor and the wind plan.

Learn more

Retractable Awnings in Nora

Fabric selection and hardware both drive lead time, and two to five weeks is the normal window. A specific acrylic on a Nora order can run longer if the mill is between runs, so we'll confirm availability before writing a date rather than after.

Learn more

Commercial Window Treatments in Nora

Closeout should leave a real document behind. A Nora project ends with an opening-by-opening schedule, the fabric and hardware specified for each, control locations and the approved submittal package, because the value of that file shows up in year six, and it isn't visible at substantial completion.

Learn more

Skylight Shades in Nora

The rooms that need these most are the ones people forget: a stairwell that bakes all afternoon, a loft office with a screen in it, a bath where privacy is fine but glare isn't. Each of those Nora rooms wants a different fabric even under identical glass.

Learn more

Sliding Glass Door Blinds in Nora

In January, with Indianapolis normals near a 20.9F low, a big glass door sheds cold into the room all night long. A cellular or a lined treatment across a Nora slider slows that drift, and it'll do more for how the seating area feels than the thermostat does.

Learn more

Panel Track Blinds in Nora

Panel count comes from width, and it isn't a free choice. Wider panels mean fewer of them and a bigger stack, narrower panels stack tighter but show more vertical seams across a Nora window, so we work that number out with you rather than defaulting to it.

Learn more

Sheer Shades in Nora

With the vanes fully open you get a genuine view, and it's better than people expect from a fabric product. The sheer facings are fine enough that a Nora backyard stays legible, which is the argument for these over a light filtering roller that flattens everything.

Learn more

Pleated Shades in Nora

A pleated shade is one layer of crisp folded fabric, and that's the honest description. There's no air pocket in it, so it handles light and privacy in a Nora room without doing what a honeycomb does, and it costs less for exactly that reason.

Learn more

Bamboo Shades in Nora

Woven shades gap at the edges more visibly than smooth fabric, because the weave itself catches and scatters light along the sides. On an inside-mounted Nora window that means the standard deduction shows twice over, which is why we'll often push these outside the opening.

Learn more

Dual Shades in Nora

A sheer shade and a dual shade both play with transparency and they don't get there the same way. A sheer uses vanes between facings for a soft diffused look, and a dual uses flat bands for a crisper modern line. A Nora room usually suits one clearly more than the other.

Learn more

Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades in Nora

IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract over $150 with real scope. On a Nora order for this configuration the paperwork should state the fabric, the lift type, whether both rails are motorized and the finished sizes, because the second rail is what's most easily left off a quote.

Learn more

Cordless Blinds in Nora

A cordless blind is a mechanism, and mechanisms have a cycle count behind them. Raised and lowered twice a day, a Nora family room blind sees a few thousand cycles before anything feels different, and that's why slat material and headrail quality matter more here than the pretty part of the catalog.

Learn more

Hardwood Shutters in Nora

If you like the look but the budget wants a different shape, wood blinds get you close for less. Same warm slat, same stain options, without the frame, the stiles, the divider rail and the hinge hardware. They also don't stay with the house the way a fitted Nora shutter does.

Learn more

Composite Shutters in Nora

Between late May and the third week of September this part of Indiana stays muggy, and interior humidity follows people in and out the door. Composite panels don't swell against the frame in that stretch, so a Nora shutter that closed cleanly in March still closes cleanly in August.

Learn more

Smart Home Shade Integration in Nora

Documentation is the deliverable people forget to ask for. When a Nora system is handed over, you should get the device list, the scene names, where each repeater sits and which app account owns the hub. Without that, the next person to touch it doesn't have a starting point.

Learn more

Blind Repair & Restring in Nora

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. There's a point where repair stops making sense. If the slats are cupped, the valance is broken and the rail is bent on the same Nora blind, you're rebuilding around a treatment that's already worn out. We'd rather price the replacement honestly than take three small fees.

Learn more

Shutter Repair in Nora

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. Repair pricing is per panel or per project, and there's no honest published range for it. What a Nora job costs depends on whether the part exists, whether the panel has to come down, and how many openings are involved. We look at the actual shutters and quote from what we see.

Learn more

Motorization Retrofit in Nora

Longevity favors the motor. Tube motors routinely outlast the apps and hubs that control them, so keeping a simple paired remote alongside any smart system means a Nora shade still works when a bridge goes end of life and the manufacturer's app stops updating.

Learn more

Outdoor Patio Shades in Nora

Outdoor patio shades for Nora porches and covered decks. Stopping sun outside the glass is the only way to stop heat before it is in the room. Outdoor-rated mesh on tensioned tracks or a manual crank, anchored into structure with a wind plan.

Learn more

Office Window Treatments in Nora

Openness factor is the number that matters on office glass. A 3 percent fabric on a west-facing Nora elevation controls afternoon glare while keeping an outward view, and a 10 percent weave keeps more daylight and more of the problem. Samples go up on the actual floor before you're asked to choose.

Learn more

Healthcare Window Treatments in Nora

Imaging and procedure rooms need real darkness, and real darkness is an assembly. Side channels, an outside mount with genuine overlap and a light-blocking pocket at the top do work that fabric alone can't, and a Nora room specified without them ends up merely dim.

Learn more

Multifamily Window Treatments in Nora

Balcony and patio doors are the openings that fail first. A wide Nora sliding door sees daily traffic at one end, and vertical vanes take the abuse there, so individual carriers and vanes should be replaceable, and the whole track shouldn't have to come down.

About Us

Local Expertise, Real Results

We'll build your Nora window treatment plan around the openings in your own house.

Nora Window Treatments covers Nora and Marion County for interior shutters, and shutters are a different exercise from shades. You're building a frame rather than hanging a product, which means the frame style, the panel layout and the divider rail height all get decided at the opening with a tape in hand. The frame is also what absorbs an out-of-square condition in an older house.

The service area covers all of Nora, from Township Line Road east to the White River and from 96th Street south to Williams Creek and 79th Street. Avenues such as Central, Park, College and Guilford run north and south, and Washington Boulevard has East Drive and West Drive addresses in the 8600 to 8900 blocks. Lots run from about 5,000 square feet at CityPointe to more than three quarters of an acre in the older plats, so the crew confirms parking and access before a measure appointment.

Your Nora project starts with the rooms you want to change. We'll ask what isn't working at the windows and look at how the light moves through your house. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones.

Our Promise

We'll explain the mounting choice before you order for your Nora home. If a product won't clear a handle or fit the available depth, we'll work through the options with you at the window.

Why Nora Chooses Us

The Reason Nora Referrals Fill Our Week

Serving Nora and Marion County with quality materials, thorough inspections, and transparent pricing.

A plan based on the local housing

Nora was never incorporated and joined Indianapolis through Unigov in 1970, and its houses range from 1940s cottages in Orchard Acres to two stories finished in 2026 in CityPointe.

Measurements for your own frames

We'll check each opening in your Nora home and look at the room available for the hardware. If a window has been changed since the house was built, the plan needs to work with the frame that's there today.

Samples viewed in your rooms

We'll discuss the finish alongside your Nora room's existing trim and furniture. The light at your own window helps you judge whether the fabric suits the space.

Our Process

What We Bring to a Nora Measure Appointment

Your Nora window treatment project starts with a design visit. We'll work through the openings before the product is ordered, then plan installation around the confirmed order.

Discuss the rooms

We'll talk through what you'd like to change in your Nora home and which rooms belong in the first phase. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Measure the openings

We'll check the available mounting space and how the windows operate. Any recently replaced frames need to be measured in their finished condition.

Review the product plan

We'll discuss the fabric and the mounting arrangement before the order goes in. If an opening limits your first choice, we'll explain what that means for the treatment.

Confirm installation details

We'll confirm the order's installation plan and explain how to use the chosen treatments. Ask about access for maintenance if you're considering motorized shades.

Common Causes

What we see most often on Nora window treatments

Nora homeowners typically call us about these scenarios.

A Nursery That Became A Bedroom

The blackout that suited a baby now blocks the light a nine year old wants for reading. Rooms change function and the treatment can usually keep up by adding a top-down feature or a second layer rather than starting over. It is a small job that people delay for years.

A Baby Arriving In Three Months

Parents want the nursery dark and they want the cords gone. Both are solvable and neither is automatic. ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 pushed the market toward cordless and inaccessible-cord designs, and genuine darkness in a Nora bedroom needs edge management rather than just a blackout fabric on an inside mount. We would rather have that conversation before the nursery gets painted.

Drapery Left Short By New Flooring

The floor got raised by an inch and now the panels hang above it looking like a mistake. Hemming to the finished floor height isn't something you can fix after the fact without recutting. It is a timing problem, and it's the reason we ask about renovation plans before measuring.

A Sunroom That Is Unusable In July

Glass on three sides and a July average high near 85.2F means the room hits an unpleasant temperature by early afternoon and stays there. Interior shades help. The bigger change is stopping the sun outside on the worst elevation, and that's a conversation most people have never had. Treating the interior alone in that room often disappoints people who spent real money.

Glare On A Home Office Monitor

Since a lot of Nora work happens at a desk at home, the afternoon sun landing across a screen has become a common reason to call. The answer is usually a darker solar shade at a lower openness rather than a room darkening fabric, because you want to keep working with the shade down rather than sitting in a cave.

A Valance Fouling The Crank Handle

Somebody hung a treatment without operating the window first, and now the handle catches every time. It's a clearance problem that should have been measured, and the fix is usually an extension bracket or a different mount. Simple to avoid and irritating to live with twice a day. We operate every window at the measure for exactly this reason.

How We Work

Five Stages, In This Order

Custom window treatments are made to your openings, so the order matters more than it does in most trades. This is how every Nora job runs.

1

Free In-Home Measure

Every opening gets three widths, three heights and a diagonal square check, because houses settle and an opening that is out of square is the difference between a shade that runs true and one that binds. Mounting depth gets read at the jamb. It all goes on paper before any product conversation starts.

2

Product and Fabric, In Your Own Light

Samples get looked at in the room they are going in, not under showroom lighting. This is where openness factor, inside versus outside mount, roll direction and material get decided, and where we tell you the light gap you are going to live with.

3

Written Scope and Contract

Opening by opening, with the mount type, the light gap, the operation and the total price in writing. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and we would write one anyway.

4

Custom Fabrication

Your sizes go to the workroom. Two to five weeks is typical depending on product and finish, longer on specialty shapes and motorized configurations. You get the real date at the measure rather than a range.

5

Install and Walkthrough

Brackets anchored for the substrate they are going into, everything checked level and square, motor travel limits set and scenes built with you standing there. Then we show you how it all works and take the packaging with us.

"Window Valet did a great job with my awning install. They took their time to verify things were level and operated properly. Their communication through the process was outstanding. It took them three trips to our house to complete the install and each time they communicated when they would arrive and they arrived when they said they were going to. They took the time to explain each step in the process, so I knew exactly what was happening. I highly recommend them."

Blind and Shade Questions From Nora

Nora's houses carry sunrooms, picture windows, walls of glass, bay windows, skylights, French doors and basement egress windows, often several in one house. Many of the older houses have replacement windows, some of them vinyl, and replacements can sit at a different depth than the originals, so the crew checks depth before choosing an inside or outside mount. Indiana sees some of the most varied weather in the country. Nora homeowners live in IECC climate zone 5A, which carries a real cooling load in summer and a real heating load in winter. July averages a high near 85F, January averages a high near 36F with lows near 21F, and the muggy season runs from late May into late September. That is why the same window can be the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January.

Check the room at the hours you use it

Tell us when glare affects your Nora room. We'll look at which window is responsible and discuss a treatment for that use of the space.

Review privacy after dark

A fabric that gives a daytime view may leave the room visible after dark. We'll discuss that difference before you choose a shade for an occupied room.

Keep working windows accessible

We'll check the treatment against the sash and the controls you use to open the window. The finished arrangement needs to let you operate both.

Connect the plan across a room

If you're covering several openings in one room, we'll discuss how the treatments look together. Each opening still gets its own measurements.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Nora Rooms

An honest breakdown of the three we specify most often, and when each one is the right answer.

Cellular Shades

The one product in this trade with measured energy numbers behind it. Trapped air in the cells does the work, and DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent on heating energy and up to 15 percent on total heating and cooling against a bare window. In a Nora house that matters in January and again in July, which is unusual for one product. Single cell suits most rooms, double cell where the glass is large or the room runs cold. Top-down bottom-up gets you daylight and privacy at the same time.

Both seasonsInsulating$$
Solar & Roller Shades

What you reach for when the complaint is afternoon sun. Solar fabrics come in stated openness factors, and that number is the whole decision: a lower openness cuts more glare and more of the view, a higher one keeps the view and cuts less. On a west or south Nora window this is usually the honest answer rather than blackout, because blackout kills the room. Cassette or fascia hides the roll, and roll direction gets decided at the measure so the fabric does not foul a crank or a lock.

Glare controlKeeps the view$$$
Plantation Shutters

The one that stays with the house. Shutters are a finish rather than a covering, and they do not get replaced every few years. In Nora the material choice is technical rather than a matter of taste: composite and poly in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, because a four month humid season followed by a dry heated winter will move real hardwood, and hardwood only where the room stays conditioned. Louver size, frame style and divider rail get decided standing at your window.

Light Control

See What Each Fabric Does To The Light

Pick a fabric below and the window updates. It's a drawing rather than a photograph, so read it as a rough guide to what each family does in a Nora room, and to what it doesn't do.

Fabric type

Sheer, 10 percent openness

Ten percent of the weave is open, so you keep the view and most of the daylight. Glare drops a little. After dark, once your lamps are on, someone outside can read shapes through it, which is why this belongs on a view window rather than a bedroom.

Openness factor is printed on the fabric card, so you can compare one line against another before you order anything.

Keeps the viewNot private after dark

Solar, 5 percent openness

The usual pick for a west window or a covered porch. You can still read the yard through it, glare comes down noticeably, and the fabric intercepts a good share of the sun before it reaches you at four in the afternoon.

It also cuts the UV landing on floors and furniture. NFRC puts UV at roughly 40 to 60 percent of fading damage, so this slows fading rather than stopping it.

View and glare controlSlows fading

Solar, 3 percent openness

A tighter weave. The room goes dimmer and the view drops back to an outline. Choose it where the sun is the problem and the view is second, which around here usually means a west wall in July. That's a common call on this side of Indianapolis.

Openness affects how much you see out, not how private you are. A 3 percent fabric still shows silhouettes at night.

View becomes an outlineStrong glare control

Solar, 1 percent openness

Close to a solid fabric with a little view left in it. This is the strongest glare control in the solar family.

The trade is that it darkens the room on a gray January day too. Indianapolis averages a January high near 36F and the light is flat, so think about how the room reads in both seasons before you commit.

Darkest solar optionDim on gray days

Light filtering

No view through it. Daylight comes through the face diffused, so the room stays bright without a hot spot across the television or the kitchen island. This is the default for living spaces.

It isn't private in reverse at night. With the lamps on and the sun down, silhouettes still show.

No view through itBright without the glare

Room darkening

A denser fabric, usually with a liner behind it. Most of the light coming through the face is gone.

Light still arrives around the edges on an inside mount, so a room darkening shade gives you a dim room rather than a dark one. If someone in the house sleeps during the day, say so at the measure and we'll scope it differently.

Dim, not darkEdges stay bright

Blackout

The fabric itself passes essentially no light. What you'll still see is the perimeter. Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

Dark facePerimeter needs a plan

Openness factor is a measured fabric spec, so you can compare it line to line. The category names are not measured. One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

College Way is a postwar plat on the north side of Nora, recorded as College Way Addition with a 2nd Section and a 3rd Section. Its houses sit on College, Carrollton and Guilford Avenues in the 8600 to 8800 blocks, just north of 86th Street, and they were built between 1949 and 1958. Lots run from about 0.54 to 0.8 acre, with some on Guilford Avenue measuring 105 by 230 feet, so the houses sit well back from each other under mature trees. The plat sits at the heart of Nora, within walking distance of the Nora branch library and Nora Center, and the houses run from about 1,400 to 2,300 square feet, most of them under 1,800. Pennwood is a 1950s plat recorded as Pennwood Addition, with three numbered sections, near the point where North Pennsylvania Street meets 86th Street. Its houses were built between 1953 and 1958, in the 8600 and 8700 blocks of North Pennsylvania Street, along Washington Boulevard East Drive and on East 86th Street. Lots run from about 0.48 to 0.71 acre, with some on Washington Boulevard East Drive at 110 by 195 feet, and the houses run from about 1,550 to 2,020 square feet. The plat sits a short walk from the Monon Trail and Nora's shopping and dining, in what residents call the Nora district, and the 1958 houses sit on the largest lots. Orchard Acres, recorded in places as McFarland's Orchard Acres, sits on the south side of Nora near Williams Creek. Its houses stand on East 82nd Street, East 84th Street, Central Avenue and North College Avenue, built between 1940 and 1962. Many parcels are parts of original lots with measured dimensions, because the original lots were divided into smaller pieces over time, and lots now run from about 0.31 to 0.74 acre. Williams Creek, part of Nora's southern boundary, runs close to several of the houses, and the Monon Trail is a short walk away. Sizes run from about 900 square feet in the 1940s cottages to about 3,800 in the largest houses, and the plat has no association. View Orchard Acres window treatment details →
Park Ave Heights is a plat of 1940s and 1950s houses along the 8400 block of North Park Avenue on the south side of Nora, recorded with a 2nd Section and an amended piece of two lots, and it reaches East 86th Street. The houses were built between 1946 and 1956, with lots from about 0.33 acre on East 86th Street to 0.43 acre on North Park Avenue. Sizes run close together, from about 1,850 to 1,960 square feet, even though the build years span a decade, and a few larger houses on the avenue reach about 2,400 square feet. Picture windows, bay windows, sunrooms and skylights all turn up along these blocks. View Park Ave Heights window treatment details →
Noraleigh is a plat of early postwar houses on Compton Street and Evergreen Avenue in the 8400 and 8500 blocks, on the south side of Nora, recorded as Noraleigh Addition. The houses were built between 1950 and 1957, on lots from 0.25 to 0.39 acre, with lot numbers running from the teens on Evergreen Avenue into the fifties on Compton Street. Sizes run from about 1,060 to 1,970 square feet. Brick is the usual exterior, with aluminum siding over brick on some of the Evergreen Avenue houses, and the plat sits a few blocks south of 86th Street, close enough to Broad Ripple that some residents describe it that way, and the plat has no association. View Noraleigh window treatment details →
Pennwood North is a small plat on Pennwood Court, in the 8900 and 9000 blocks north of 86th Street, with houses built between 1985 and 1988. The plat identifies lots by block, from Block A to Block E, and lots measure from about 6,400 square feet to 0.26 acre. The houses are two bedroom, two bath homes of about 1,200 to 1,620 square feet, brick or brick with vinyl siding, and an association maintains the exteriors, with dues that cover structure maintenance and snow removal and, on some houses, lawn care, grounds maintenance and management. A separate plat called Pennwood Addition lies to the south, with 1950s houses on far larger lots, so the two Pennwoods differ in age and scale. View Pennwood North window treatment details →
Crystal Lake at River Ridge is a lake community on Crystal Lake Drive and Crystal River Drive, in the 8800 to 9200 blocks north of 86th Street. The plat runs through at least Section 4, and the houses date from 1998 through 2014. Lot numbers reach past 100 in Section 4, where the lots measure about 7,500 square feet, and lots elsewhere run up to about 8,900. Crystal Lake is a waterfront lake, and some houses have a private dock. The houses are brick, some with wood or cement siding, and they run from about 2,660 to 4,310 square feet, with monthly association dues that cover the entrance common area, insurance, lawn care, grounds maintenance and snow removal. College Commons is an association area on the north side of Nora, bounded by 96th Street on the north, 91st Street on the south, College Avenue on the east and Pennsylvania Street on the west. The College Commons Neighborhood Association registered in 1997, and the area counts among Nora's recognized subdivisions. The houses inside those lines are mixed, from 1950s cottages on Central Avenue and 1956 houses on Washington Boulevard to 1972 brick houses on North College Avenue and 1989 infill houses on Warwick Road. Many of the lots carry the Northampton plat name, and sizes run from about 900 to 1,700 square feet, so the area reads as a mix of small postwar houses and later infill. View College Commons window treatment details →
Sherwood Forest is a neighborhood on the north edge of Nora, between 91st Street and 96th Street, with the Monon Trail on the west and Westfield Boulevard on the east. The Sherwood Forest Civic Association registered in 2001, and the area counts among Nora's recognized subdivisions. The plat was recorded in at least four sections, and the houses were built from 1959 to 1970 on Sherwood Lane, Nora Lane, Nottingham Drive, Pittwood Drive and East 96th Street, on lots between 0.46 and 0.63 acre. They're brick houses of about 1,860 to 2,330 square feet, some with wood or cedar accents, and sunrooms and covered front porches are common across the neighborhood, with no homeowners association collecting dues. View Sherwood Forest window treatment details →
CityPointe is a newly built community on the north side of Nora, with Real Street running through the 1700 and 1800 blocks and Bauhaus Way through the 9300 to 9500 blocks. The Real Street lots carry the CityPointe plat name, while the Bauhaus Way houses sit in Shortee's Subdivision, including an amended plat, so the streets grouped here carry more than one plat name. The houses were built in 2025 and 2026, two story homes with three bedrooms upstairs and cement siding, of about 1,755 to 2,080 square feet. The community sits at the Crossing, between Carmel and Keystone, next to Sherwood Forest, and association dues cover the entrance common area, insurance, maintenance, a putting green and walking trails.
